Cut and Color for Less

Who would really pay Sally Hershberger $1000 for a hair cut? Especially in this economy? Having your hair done one of the high end salons in New York City can cost upward of $150 for a cut and $300 for color. For the newly underemployed from the fashion industry who are used to getting things for free, it's time for reality check. I can no longer take advantage of all the stylists and colorists I hired for my events, so I decided to explore the options out there.

I went to have my lovely locks trimmed at Aveda Institute in Soho, a top school for aspiring stylists.  What would normally cost me $90 to $150, was $20. However, I didn't just go to anyone at Aveda. I mean, who trusts students? When you arrive for your appointment you should request Kyle Krieger. Not only is Kyle handsome and perky, he has experience, unlike some of the other students. Kyle is also the bartender at the hottest and most secret restaurant in the West Village, Charles, so he knows how to make a mean martini. You you can't request him in advance but tell the person at reception that you are his friend. Sometimes you have to make an appointment weeks in advance, so I advise just walking in on a weekday around 10am.

My philosophy about hair is that a bad cut can grow back, but bad hair color will result in frying your hair if you try to fix it, so go to someone you trust and that comes highly recommended.   I went on to Lifeboooker.com and got an appointment at Rita Hazan for 15% off. This site has tons of amazing deals and discounts from some of the best spas and hair salons in New York City. My friend Tory Kirby, beauty editor of Allure, recommended Carrie McCard at Rita Hazan.  She's Rita's assistant and does practically the same technique as Rita, for a fraction of the cost.
