How Many Jobs You Got?

The other day someone asked me, "What are you working on?" The question resulting in an answer that lasted five minutes, "I'm working at Charles restaurant, creating a media kit, doing business development and PR for an internet start up, doing front of house for the Tory Burch show, working at In The Know luxury travel concierge, producing an event, doing sales for Wren at the D & A show..." I realized that I sounded like that skit from In Living Color called "Hey Mon!," in which the members a Jamaican family, the Hedley's, have many jobs (see video link below). The show always starts with the father greeting the audience with, "Hey Mon!" followed soon thereafter by, "How many jobs you got?"

The most important thing you will learn to do in this economy is to be resourceful and diversify. If you are underemployed, you will often find yourself faced with opportunities that are far below your skill level. Suck up your pride and use these as a chance to keep yourself out there, interacting with people in your industry or a new industry. These odd jobs will expose you to trying new experiences outside of your comfort zone. You might actually gain some new skills and find that you enjoy sales, even though your background was in fashion PR or maybe you can make more money being the Executive Assistant to a CEO. If you're making six figures, who cares if you are fetching coffee and organizing magazines? You have a job!
