In this current economic climate, having a car is Manhattan is like throwing money down a drain. The costs of a car payment, parking, insurance and maintenance made me wish that I never bought the car in the first place. So what can you do now that they are stuck with this car? No one, I mean NO ONE in NYC is buying a car, due to unemployment and the greedy banks that are hoarding the government's (and tax payer's) money and not giving out loans. I've been trying to sell mine for five months on Craiglist, Ebay, Autotrader and the local papers in NJ and Long Island. Here are a few tips:
-Banish it to the 'burbs. If you don't use your car often and will only be using it during the summer, park it in a friend's family's driveway outside of the city
-Find less expensive parking options in the city. Circle Parking Garage on 51st between 7th and Broadway (in the Sheraton), has spots for $225 a month. It's an easy subway trip - the 1, NR, and ACE within blocks of the garage. You don't have to call, just drop off your car mention the rate and they will take care of you.
-Finagle with your garage. Tell your garage that you found a better priced garage. They need your business and will most likely bring down the price of your parking. You may just have to play a little hard ball.
-Register it in another state. Insurance and registration outside of New York City is less expensive (even for LI and Jersey). Drive to your family's house to transfer your plates and insurance to their area. You may flinch at the sight of out-of-state plates, but will be much happier when your insurance statement is cut in half each moth.
